Designer of the month - Aldo Rossi

Aldo Rossi was born in Milan (1931-1997) and was considered by many to be the best Italian architect of the second half of the 20th century. Rossi was internationally recognized as a theorist, author, artist, teacher, designer and architect, and was also the first Italian Architect to receive a Pritzer Architecture Award in 1990. Author of the abstract and reduction, his language of simple shapes and geometric patterns, he created some of the most poetic works of architecture and design of his time.

He graduated in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano in 1959. Between 1956 and 1957 he worked in the studios of Architects and Designers: Ignazio Gardella and Marco Zanuso. In 1963, Aldo Rossi began his long career at the academy as a teacher, first as an assistant teacher to the Architect and Urban Planner, Ludovico Quaroni, at the School of Urban Planning in Arezzo.

In 1966 he published his book "The Architecture of the City", which quickly became a classic must-read in architectural literature.

During the 1960s, he dedicated his career practically to architectural theory. In 1970 he took a new direction when he designed a significant part of the Gallaratese Quarter for Carlo Aymonino, on Mount Amiata. Also part of this new direction was Rossi's participation in the San Cataldo Cemetery.

The work of the Theoretical Architect and Urban Designer, Aldo Rossi, was well exemplified in his two published books: "The Architecture of the City" (L'architettura della città, 1966) and "A Scientific Autobiography" (Autobiografia Scientifica, 1981).

During his career, Rossi has completed several significant projects outside Italy, such as the Toronto Lighthouse Theatre in Canada; The Palazzo Hotel and Restaurant Complex in Fukuoka, Japan; The Monumental Arch in Galveston, Texas; The New School of Architecture in Miami, Florida; Pocono Pines houses in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania; and Parc de la Villette in Paris, France.

Going through Product Design, the products he designed are a reflection of the style we notice in Aldo Rossi's architecture. His iconic work in the product scope was, without a doubt, Parigi Chair for Unifor. Even so, he counted on other collaborations, such as the pieces that he elaborated for Alessi. These creations bring together his architectural style to the innovative and functional design. These pieces are available in our store.

Geometric shapes with simple lines are a constant presence in Aldo Rossi's architectural projects. He transformed it into real objects to be touched and used, becoming icons of the domestic universe, and which we still recognize today as unique, elegant and practical pieces.
