Designer of the month - Arne Jacobsen

Today we celebrate the 119th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen’s birth (1902-1971). Recognized worldwide for his simplicity, and for the modern touch he gives to the design world, Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer. Having contributed significantly to the functionalism of the Danish modern and minimalist style, Jacobsen left us a vast architectural heritage, being a reference in the design field.

With a degree in architecture from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Jacobsen was also an apprentice bricklayer. From the beginning of his career, his creativity and irreverence were evident in all his creations. While still a student, in 1925 he attended the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, in Paris, where he was awarded a silver medal for his famous chair in natural wicker, with a solid cane structure.

With an extraordinary sense of proportion and an eye for detail, Jacobsen has also developed interior design projects, creating highly visionary and innovative concepts.

In his 69 years of life, and combining his fearless spirit with his artistic and creative streak, the Nordic designer has created dozens of iconic pieces along his professional path. As a result of many of those architectural works, several award-winning furniture design projects emerged, such as the Ant chair (1951), the Series 7 (1955) and the Egg chair (1957).

Although he's best known for his design pieces, Jacobsen also had an exceptional contribution to his architectural achievements that embody Nordic design. Taking on avant-garde and modern style, the Danish designer built The Stelling House, a timeless building in his hometown, Copenhagen.

Passionate about his profession, Jacobsen believed that the main factor of architecture was based on proportions and that no building should be disregarded as an architectural element, as long as it was designed in the correct proportions.

In 1967, Arne Jacobsen designed the award-winning Cylinda cocktail and tableware series for Stelton, which became the essence of Stelton's design DNA. The Cylinda Line was recognized with the 1967 ID award, by the Danish Society of Industrial Design, and the 1968 International Design Award by The American Institute of Interior Designer.

On the collection's 50th anniversary, Stelton presented the Cylinda-Line 50th Anniversary. The Line is available in our online store.

It's a collection that revolutionized the conservative world of that time and still leaves fans in love by the modern and minimalist design until today.

“In a way, the sense of quality has improved, the status symbol of the small things is gone, and it is acceptable to use stainless steel, even if the neighbour uses silver.”
