Have you already picked out your Christmas crib?

Besides the Christmas tree, the Christmas crib is one of the most important elements in the Christmas home decoration. Do you already have yours?

How it all began

The assembly of the nativity scene is a tradition that dates back to the 12th century and is fulfilled to this day. The first images representing the birth of the baby Jesus were made in mosaics inside churches and temples in the 6th century. However, it is believed that the first Christmas crib created with individual characters was made by St. Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226). The Catholic friar created clay figures to represent the birth of Jesus, as described in the Christian Bible, in Italy.

Representation of the nativity scene

Nowadays, there are countless representations of the moment of Jesus' birth. Some are simpler, with just the main figures - Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and others are more wide-ranging and include the Three Magi, shepherds, animals, angels and the star. Each with its own symbolism and significance.

In addition to the huge variety in the number of figures, it's also possible to find Christmas cribs with different sizes, materials and styles. For larger spaces, we recommend choosing a Christmas crib with a significant size and with a larger number of details. In smaller spaces, the best choice is to go for cribs with only the main characters or cribs with miniature representations.

Setting up the Christmas crib

This representation of Jesus's birth has great symbolism. Because of its history and simplicity, this scene has become a true universal message of love, hope, and family.

Year after year, these figures are present in the Christmas decorations of many homes. Traditionally, the Christmas crib is set up on the first Sunday of Advent, that is, four weeks before Christmas, between the last week of November and the first week of December. So this year the Christmas crib should be set up on November 27th.
