How to clean a Le Creuset cast iron cocotte

Have you bought a Le Creuset cast iron cocotte and don't know how to clean it after use? Don't worry, it's very easy!

Le Creuset cast iron cocottes are real gems in your kitchen. They represent not only a way of cooking, but also a way of celebrating authenticity and conviviality. For almost a century, this brand's cast iron utensils have been recognized for their superior performance and unique design, and also for their long-lasting quality.

Anyone who cooks with Le Creuset cocottes knows the incredible cooking results they deliver. However, after cooking a delicious recipe, you must tackle an equally important task: cleaning the cocotte.

Due to their enameled interior, these pieces do not require the same care as traditional raw cast iron pots and pans.

Proper maintenance allows you to get more out of these kitchen classics that are designed to last a lifetime. Learn step by step how to clean and care for your Le Creuset cocotte.

 How to clean a cocotte

  • Step 1: Let it cool down

After using your cocotte, it is very important to let it cool down before washing.  Putting cold water on a hot cocotte can damage the enamel and potentially compromise its durability. So be patient and wait until it cools naturally.

  • Step 2: Clean gently

Enameled cast iron cocotte can go in the dishwasher, but handwashing is recommended. To remove stubborn residue, fill the cocotte with warm water and a small amount of detergent and leave to soak to soften the residue. To remove dirt, use a non-abrasive nylon scouring pad or a soft sponge to keep the enameled finish intact.

Only as a last resort: For particularly persistent residues, combine a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda in half a pot of warm water. Bring to a boil over low heat for 8 to 10 minutes. Then use a spatula to remove any burnt-on food debris.

  • Step 3: Clean burnt surfaces

If burn marks appear on the bottom (do not affect the reliability) of your cocotte and regular cleaning does not work, apply the detergent and baking soda paste mentioned above and remove with a soft sponge.

Step 4: Dry the cocotte

Never store utensils while they are still wet. After washing the cocotte, dry it thoroughly and store it in a dry, well-ventilated cupboard away from sources of steam.

Maintenance and extra care:

- To keep your cocotte in great condition for many years to come, avoid using metal utensils, as they can damage the enamel. Prefer wooden, silicone or nylon utensils.

- Avoid extreme temperature changes, such as putting the hot cocotte in cold water, as it can cause thermal shock and damage the enamel.

- Le Creuset enameled cast iron is extremely durable, but can be damaged if accidentally dropped or if it is thrown against a sturdy surface. So try your best to avoid this type of event.
