The best barbecue sauces: two simple and homemade recipes

There are countless barbecue sauces available on the market, but there is no better version than the homemade one. Although they're different, the two recipes we have for you are equally tasty, fast and easy to make at home. With just a few ingredients, you can add more flavor to your barbecues.

Classic American barbecue sauce (480 ml)

This recipe is ideal for the hot months ahead. Easy to make and can be used in many ways: as a marinade, salad dressing, accompanying sauce... the possibilities are practically endless.

Ingredients:

2 cups ketchup

½ cup apple cider vinegar

¼ cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon Worcestershire or soy sauce

1 tablespoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

¼ teaspoon chili

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

¼ teaspoon ground coriander

¼ teaspoon ground cumin

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons olive oil

Pepper

Salt

Method of preparation

Put all the ingredients in a small pot and light the stove over medium heat. Bring to a boil. Once it bubbles, lower the heat and simmer until it thickens. This process takes about 10 minutes.

Serve immediately or let it cool slightly. You can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Healthy Barbecue Sauce (480 ml)

Besides being healthy and easy to make, this sauce has the same bold, sweet and tangy flavor as traditional barbecue sauce. It is vegan, free of refined sugars and also gluten-free.

Ingredients

½ teaspoon olive oil

2 cloves of garlic, minced

¼ cup of onion

400ml tomato sauce (100% tomato)

2 tablespoons of tomato paste

3 tablespoons maple syrup or agave

1 tsp molasses

1 tsp apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon soy sauce (without added sugar and food coloring)

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

½ teaspoon paprika

¼ teaspoon pepper

½ teaspoon ground chili

Pinch of cinnamon

Salt to taste

Method of preparation

In a pan, sauté the olive oil, garlic and onion for about 5 minutes. Watch carefully so that the garlic doesn't burn. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, maple syrup or agave, molasses, vinegar, soy sauce and mustard to the pan. Stir well.

Add the spices and stir again. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. The heat should not be too high to avoid splashing.

Use immediately or let cool to consume. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
