Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Your Barbecue

Ready for a good family barbecue? We all already miss those outside lunches that extend through the sunny afternoon and the nights with the sardine on the bread!

At In&Out Cooking, we have a wide range ofcharcoalgaselectric, and hybrid barbecues at your disposal, of the best quality, so you can cook the best grills of your life! Not sure which is the best option for you? We help you here.

However, to take advantage of the maximum potential of the equipment and it has higher durability, it is necessary to maintain regular cleaning and maintenance throughout the uses. Thus, here, we will give you some tips on this topic.

Regularity

Although it is not necessary to do a thorough cleaning after each use of the grill, it is important to always clean the areas used, for example, the grills. However, at the beginning and end of each “grilling season” it is advisable to do a more thorough cleaning, since the equipment has been (or will be) stopped for a long time.

If you use the barbecue throughout the year regularly, it is advisable to do a thorough cleaning once or twice a year.

Necessary Materials

First of all, it is important to have all the necessary materials for cleaning your barbecue:

All materials may not be necessary, depending on the type of barbecue, the dirtiness and the type of cleaning you want to do (deep or regular).

Avoid using other strong and corrosive cleaning products (especially if the grill is stainless steel) unless they are specific for cleaning barbecues. However, always do a test in a smaller area before using it in all the equipment.

General Tips

  • Always keep the barbecue's instruction manual, because it may contain important and specific information regarding the cleaning method you should follow.
  • Choose a more cloudy day for this task, as too much sun can create spots on the grill.
  • It is preferable to choose to clean your barbecue in an outdoor space, as it can dirty the surroundings.
  • Start cleaning your barbecue right after use, when it is still warm, as this prevents the remains of food and fat from drying and becoming more difficult to remove. To do this, you must protect your hands with heat-resistant gloves.
  • If the grates are very dirty and it is possible to remove them from the grill, immerse them in warm, soapy water for a few minutes before rubbing. If it doesn't work, put in baking soda, let it act for 3 minutes, then spray vinegar, let it act for 5 minutes and only then rub. By cleaning the grids at the end of each use, you avoid having to use these methods.
  • Another way to clean the grids is to skew half an onion in a carving fork and rub the grill, still hot, before washing it with soap and water. The water in the onion evaporates and cleans the grill, removing impurities and fats, since this vegetable has natural antibacterial properties.
  • After cleaning the grills, apply vegetable oil to prevent rust (if it is not stainless steel) from appearing and the food to get caught.
  • Clean the outside of the barbecue with a damp cloth and then clean it with a dry one (if the dirt remains, wipe with a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and detergent).

Charcoal Barbecues

In the case of charcoal barbecues, there are some aspects to consider in the cleaning process:

  1. After using the barbecue, ALWAYS remove the used charcoal/ash from a metal bucket.
  2. Rub and scrape the grids to remove all stuck residues (in In&Out Cooking you will find not only cleaning brushes but also 2 in 1 brushes, with the scraper already incorporated, for greater practicality). Then wash the grills with warm water and detergent and dry them with a soft cloth.
  3. Clean the inside of the grill using a soft sponge with warm, soapy water.
  4. Replace the grills and close all air dampers.

Electric Barbecues

In the case of electric barbecues, there are some aspects to consider in the cleaning process:

  1. Make sure that the equipment is not connected to the electricity.
  2. The ideal time to start cleaning is 10 minutes after switching off.
  3. If the barbecue has a removable fat collector, remove it each use and wash it with hot water and washing up liquid.
  4. Rub and scrape the grids to remove all stuck residues (in In&Out Cooking you will find not only cleaning brushes but also 2 in 1 brushes, with the scraper already incorporated, for greater practicality). Then, if the grids are removable, wash them with warm water and detergent and dry them with a soft cloth. If not, just "wash" them with a soft, damp sponge and then dry with a soft cloth. Be careful with abrasive brushes, as this can damage the non-stick part of the grill (if any).
  5. NEVER use abundant water directly on the grill, as it is electrical equipment, it can be damaged when wet.

Gas Barbecues

In the case of gas barbecues, there are some aspects to consider in the cleaning process:

  1. Leave the grill on at maximum temperature with the lid closed for about half an hour to burn off any residual fat.
  2. For your safety, be sure to disconnect the gas tank before starting cleaning and check if it is necessary to refill it for the next use. If possible, also remove the gas tubes.
  3. Clean the gas line with, for example, a chopstick wrapped in a towel. This is often a hiding place for spiders and insects.
  4. Remove any parts that can be removed and clean them.
  5. Rub and scrape the grids to remove all stuck residues (in In&Out Cooking you will find not only cleaning brushes but also 2 in 1 brushes, with the scraper already incorporated, for greater practicality). Then wash the racks with warm water and detergent and dry them with a soft cloth.
  6. Check if the burners are clogged.
  7. Clean the inside of the grill using a soft sponge with warm, soapy water.
  8. Put everything back together, connect the gas and leave the barbecue on for a few minutes. This way, you will burn all possible detergent residues or specific products that you used to clean, ensuring safety in your future grills.

Storage

So that cleaning is not “in vain” and to prolong the life of your barbecue, it is important that it is covered, whenever it is not being used. In addition, it should preferably be kept in a sheltered and clean place, especially when it is not used for a longer period.

The covers, when strong and of good quality, become durable and resistant to protect the barbecues from the weather, dirt, and damage by external agents.

At In&Out Cooking we have available high-quality covers of several sizes and formats, specific to the barbecues in our portfolio. See which one is best for you, here.

Keep in mind that, keeping the barbecue clean, not only ensures your health (avoiding contamination in your food), but it is also safer (preventing fires), prevents infestations, makes it more attractive, and extends its useful life.
