Travel to Italy: Traditional Pizza Dough Recipe

Attention passengers, the flight to Italy is about to depart!

As we all know, Italy is a boot-shaped country, situated in south-central Europe, bordering France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the microstates San Marino and the Vatican. Its official language is Italian, has around 60 and a half million inhabitants and despite Rome being its capital and an almost obligatory place to visit, the whole country is very popular with tourists.

It is due not only to Italy being considered the center of the Roman Empire and Christianity but also to its beautiful landscapes from the mountainous relief, the extensive coastline, and even the volcanism. In addition, and not least, its culture, art, and historical contributions are highly valued around the world, as well as the hospitality of Italians and its delicious cuisine.

Italian cuisine, loved by many, is characterized by its several kinds of pasta, pizzas, wines, and cheeses, and for using a lot of ingredients such as tomatoes, peppers, corn, basil,... It is also a country well known for its olive oil, bread, salami, balsamic vinegar, and of course the famous espresso.

Italian pizza is nothing less than a yeast dough, traditionally round, covered with tomato sauce and ingredients that usually include cheese, cooked or smoked meats and aromatic herbs, usually oregano or basil. After assembling everything, the pizza is traditionally taken to a wood-fired oven to be baked.

To celebrate World Pizza Day (June 10th,) we are going to share with you an easy recipe without secret of a traditional Italian pizza dough to make at home. ”Travel” with your family and friends to the “boot of Europe” through a delicious homemade pizza.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1/3 cup fine durum wheat semolina
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp powdered milk
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp dry active yeast

Method:

  1. Put all the ingredients in a bowl, except the oil, which must be added at the end when the ingredients are mixed. Mix all ingredients by hand until you get a uniform dough.
  2. Roll it into a ball, cover it with a cloth, and let it sit for 60 minutes, or overnight, in the fridge.
  3. After resting, place it on the round or rectangular floured mat and stretch it out until it forms the desired shape, using a rolling pin or using your hands. Cover again with a cloth.
  4. If you prefer a thin-crust pizza, immediately place the chosen ingredients on top and take it to the oven.
  5. If you want a thick crust, let the dough rise until it doubles in size (approximately 2 hours, depending on room temperature). When the dough rises, place the tomato sauce and ingredients to taste on top and bake.
  6. Whichever you prefer, preheat the oven to 200ºC (392ºF) (over/under cooking and fan).
  7. Place the pizza in the center of the oven grill and bake the pizza for approximately 20 minutes. Look around and when you like it, remove the pizza from the oven, using kitchen grips, so as not to burn yourself.
  8. Another alternative to a conventional oven is to use the stone dish and cook the pizza on your barbecue. This way you will have a taste similar to the traditional pizza made in a wood oven!

The ingredients to put on top of the dough, as mentioned in point 5, are according to your taste, as there are many different varieties and combinations. For example, one of the most famous pizzas in Italy is the Marguerita, traditional from Naples, and in addition to the tomato sauce base, it contains fresh mozzarella cheese and basil, thus symbolically forming the colors of the Italian flag.
