Michael Graves is this month’s designer! American architect, professor, painter and designer, Graves was born in 1934 in Indianapolis, EUA.
In early 80’s, with the construction of Portland towers, Michael Graves emerged as the most prominent figure in postmodernist architecture. In addition to the classic reference, Graves also showed interest in kitsch, when he designed two great resorts for Walt Disney World: Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin.
He has also become a recognized figure in household items, with the creation of emblematic objects for the Italian brand Alessi. One of the most important is the iconic Kettle Small Bird-Shaped Whistle, from 1985, mainly acclaimed for imitating the singing of a bird. A conical shape in polished stainless steel with colored elements and, the cherry on top of the cake, a bird that whistled the warning of boiling water. Nowadays there is also the same model in the form of a Cordless Electric Kettle, birds of various colors to put in your classic kettle and even a dragon.
Besides this unique piece, the American Architect and Designer has also created a series of other equally elegant and functional pieces, with their very particular and easily recognizable style, always valuing the quality of Alessis’ pieces, using stainless steel and a high level design that transforms everyday objects into real pieces of art.
