Designer of the month - Peter Zumthor

We celebrate the minimalist uniqueness of Peter Zumthor, one of the most prestigious Swiss architects of the 21st century. Born on April 26st 1943, Zumthor marks 77 years of his life. The essence of his artistic work explores the sensory qualities of spaces and materials, reaffirming the minimalist style.

Peter Zumthor's philosophy on the design concept and the construction process is based on the symbiotic relationship of the structure with the environment. In Thinking Architecture, the architect expresses his motivation to design buildings with a powerful emotional connection and unique presence.

During his academic training, Zumthor went to several institutes, such as the Kunstgewerbeschule (school of arts and crafts) in 1963, and the Pratt Institute in New York in 1966.

In 1968 he was a conservationist architect in the Department for the Preservation of Monuments in the canton of Graubünden. This professional passage allowed him to increase his understanding and artistic sensibility towards a more rustic style of construction, including modernist details.

Awarded the Pritzker prize in 2009 and the RIBA Royal Gold medal in 2013, Zumthor has developed several works in architecture and design. He also taught at prestigious European and American universities.

He currently works in his studio, which he founded in 1979 in Haldenstein, Switzerland. He holds a prestigious portfolio of renowned works, such as The Sogn Benedetg Chapel in Somvitg (1988); The thermal baths in Vals (1996); Kunsthaus in Bregenz (1997) and the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover (2000).

In addition to his career as an architect, Zumthor explored his artistic vein as a designer and was responsible for the design of some items and kitchen tools for prestigious European brands, such as the Italian brand Alessi.

Inspired by the natural and mineral world, Zumthor designed a highly minimalist and elegant collection - consisting of six containers, crystalline glass and silver steel lid. The design presents a balance between form, function and quality. Discover here this Alessi collection, available in our In&Out Cooking shop.
