Trip to Spain: Traditional Tortilla Recipe

Passengers, we have arrived in Spain!

With about 46 and a half million inhabitants, Spain is an integral part of the Iberian Peninsula along with Portugal and also borders France, Andorra, and Morocco. In this country, the official language is Castilian (commonly called Spanish) however, there are areas of its vast territory where variations are used, such as Basque, Catalan, Galician, and Aragonese.

Despite its capital being Madrid, cities like Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia are also considered to be highly developed. What most attracts tourists to this country, in addition to the paradise beaches of Ibiza, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife (among others), is its diverse culture, from dancing to painting, historical monuments of great architectural significance and (of course !) its gastronomy.

Spanish cuisine, influenced by different cultures, is considered Mediterranean since potatoes and vegetables are very present in its dishes, and there is never a lack of bread and wine on the table to accompany meals. However, this country distinguishes itself from the others, which follow the Mediterranean diet (such as Italy), for making dishes a little fatter and heavier, but equally tasty.

Throughout the territory, the cuisine is quite varied but there are some dishes recognized as typical of the country, such as Paella, Tapas, Gaspacho, Tortilla, among others. Although Spain is not that strong in sweets and desserts, the famous churros and Turrón de Alicante, for example, originate from this country.

In this article, we will give more focus to “Tortilla de Patata”. Traditional Spanish Tortilla is identical to the classic omelet in that it takes a lot of eggs, however it also contains French fries and sometimes onion, depending on the area of Spain where it is made. Other versions came later that include, for example, chorizo or jamón (a very typical species of ham in this country).

The origin of this dish generates some controversy since several versions of the story appear as time goes by. Some people claim the origin in the region of Navarre, others in Extremadura, but one thing is certain: the creation of this dish came from a need to quench people's hunger in a nutritious, fast, and cheap way.

Now that we know a little more about the context of this dish and its country of origin, let's get to the most important thing: the traditional tortilla recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium potatoes
  • Salt
  • Peanut oil for frying
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 clove of garlic

Preparation:

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut into thin slices and salt them. Set them aside.
  2. Heat a little peanut oil in a frying pan and saute the garlic and onion until translucent. Remove to a large bowl and set aside.
  3. Fry the potato slices in peanut oil, in the same frying pan, until translucent. Add it with the onion.
  4. In a bowl, beat the eggs and add them to the onion and potato mixture.
  5. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and add the egg, onion, and potato mixture, and cook for about 5 minutes. Remove the frying pan from the stove and cover it with a large plate. Carefully and protected by handles, turn the tortilla on the plate and place it back in the frying pan to cook on the other side for about 3 minutes.
  6. Let the tortilla cool on a plate, cut it into pieces or slices, and serve it, for example, with a salad.

Fun fact: Did you know that Tortilla is so popular in this country that the Spaniards even use an expression that includes its name? "Dar la vuelta a la tortilla", which means "to reverse the circumstances" or "totally change the situation".
